Students with an interest in aviation are learning there is more to the industry than flying a plane. Through the CTE Aviation Maintenance program, they are learning the science, the construction and the engineering that goes into building a career in the field.

One of the oldest Career and Technical Education programs in Comal ISD is automotive technology which is offered at Canyon High School. Students gain hands-on experience inside the Cougars auto shop and earn industry-based certifications that build the foundation for careers in the automotive industry.

Students who are involved in CTE organizations have many opportunities to sharpen their leadership and technical skills through competitions. So far this year, 13 Comal ISD students have qualified for state competitions in just a few CTE organizations including FFA, FCCLA and HOSA.

Only the best high school musicians, singers and dancers become All-State honorees, and Comal ISD had a dozen this year. The state-wide competitions include intense auditions and entail hours of practice.

The assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Canyon High School, Nate Leonard, was named as the athletic coordinator and head football coach during the Comal ISD Board of Trustees meeting on Feb. 23.

Elementary and middle school teams competed in the First Lego League qualifying tournament featuring this year's 'SuperPowered' theme focusing on energy.

More students are taking career and technical education classes these days, and one class in particular has become popular - floral design.

The Comal ISD Board of Trustees approved a bond package that will accommodate continued enrollment growth as well as address items such as campus safety and security, student technology, and expansions and improvements at existing campuses during a meeting on Feb. 15.

February is Career and Technical Education (CTE) month and the perfect time to highlight a few of the CTE programs offered at Comal ISD high schools. The spotlight today is on the health sciences program which allows students to gain experience and earn certifications in the healthcare field.

The last home game of the season will be about more than just basketball for the Pieper High School Warriors who are hosting a Coaches vs. Cancer fund-raising campaign on Friday, Feb. 10, in support of a fellow classmate who is battling a cancer diagnosis.
