Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Comal ISD Superintendent Andrew Kim to the State Board of Educator Certification for a term set to expire Feb. 1, 2027. The board develops certification and continuing education requirements and standards of conduct for public teachers.
“I am honored to be appointed to this board by Governor Abbott,” says Kim. “This is a great opportunity to serve not only our district but our state and to help set a standard for teachers in public education.”
The State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) was created by the Texas Legislature in 1995 to recognize public school educators as professionals and grant educators the authority to govern the standards of their profession.
The board is made of 15 members including 11 voting members appointed by the governor to six-year terms. The 11 include four classroom teachers, one counselor, two administrators and four citizens. Four non-voting members also serve on the board.
Besides this latest appointment, Kim serves on the Texas School Safety Center Board of Directors; is the chair of the Policy Committee on Public Education Information (PCPEI); was selected to Lt. Governor Dan Patrick’s School Superintendent Advisory in 2018; and was named by Governor Abbott as presiding Officer to the Texas Commission on Next Generation Assessments and Accountability in 2016.
